We are Long Term Care professionals who realized that, while well intentioned, the majority of long term care facility mid-level management does not fully understand the “Art” of Management. The typical approach is hierarchal in nature and manage in a top to bottom type mentality. It is not surprising since this is how they were managed prior to becoming a manger. Unfortunately, changing this type of ingrained behavior is at best challenging and in most cases, simply a battle which cannot be won.
Volumes of anecdotal evidence supports that employees respond positively to positive reinforcement and negatively to negative reinforcement. While this revelation is common sense, the application of consistent positive reinforcement is generally rare and or when applied, it is sadly, misapplied.
